Acne

What is Acne?

Acne is a skin condition caused by blocked pores which result in pimples. A pore contains an oil gland-when there is too much oil it can block the pore, trapping dirt, dead skin, and bacteria. Acne may be the result of hormones, medications, or oily cosmetic products.

Treatments for acne can include topical and oral medications. Some drugs used to treat acne include retinoids (Retin-A, Accutane), sulfa antibiotics (sulfacetamide/sulfur), tetracycline antibiotics (Solodyn, Minocin), macrolide antibiotics (benzoyl peroxide), and birth control for balancing hormones.
